SENIOR TMC LEADER DINESH TRIVEDI RESIGNS FROM PARLIAMENT, SAYING "I FEEL SUFFOCATED"
Moments after Rajyasabha MP Dinesh Trivedi announced his resignation, the news came as a shock to many Trinamool Congress (TMC) party members. The 70-year-old former railway minister and a senior TMC leader's resignation from the positions of MP and TMC member, comes with speculations about his alleged allegiance to the BJP.
Mr. Trivedi while responding to the rumours that 'he was joining the BJP' said, "I am trying to join myself first," however he did not, interestingly, ruled it out.
Mr Trivedi had expressed his surprise earlier in the Rajya Sabha while criticising the state of affairs in Bengal.
"The kind of violence that is unfolding in Bengal, it is a danger to democracy. I feel very uncomfortable sitting here. I think of what I should do. I think of Rabindranath Tagore. Follow the party discipline? Of course, but I feel suffocated. My soul is indicating, I sit here and say nothing, what is the point? I resign," he stated in his parliament speech.
Sources from TMC party working committee admitted that Trivedi's reason of 'suffocation' within the party felt like an unexpected shock.
Other senior leaders from TMC claimed that they never received any request of negotiation from Trivedi.
"We didn't see this coming. The method he took is absolutely unparalleled," said Trinamool Lok Sabha MP Sougata Roy.
"On Sunday, we took the same flight to Delhi. we had a conversation for such a long time. He didn't communicate his feelings to me. But I received information that he met someone in Delhi with a very senior leader of the opposition. The leader he met does not belong to the BJP," Sougata added.
Another top leader of Trinamool Congress, seeking secrecy, said that Trivedi had denied to denounce Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"The party has tried several times over the past three months to have him comment on national issues and against the new farm bill. But he was obviously refusing to speak out against Modi,' said the TMC leader.
