Supreme Court Puts Halt on Farm Bills Questioning Centre’s Avail
The Supreme Court today announced the adjournment of farm bills implementation and called off the Central governments’ analogy.
The SC also appointed a Farm Bill committee to look into the laws and expressed its agitation towards the Centre’s attitude on farm laws.
The Central government has clarified then and now that the laws were not a result of hurried actions but discarding their words, the court demanded to pause farm laws implementation for now.
SA Bobde, CJI assured that the court is trying to handle the situation and carry forward the farmers’ attempt as the court holds the power to do so.
CJI said “These are matters of life and death. We are concerned with laws. We are concerned with the lives and property of people affected by the agitation. We are trying to solve the problem in the best way. One of the powers we have is to suspend the legislation. We want to solve the problem and that's why we are making the committee. Give the names to us, we will decide.”
SA Bobde further passed harsh comments to the Centre and clarified farmers have the right to protest and the Centre holds no power to deteriorate their actions.
As the Centre demanded more time to negotiate with the farmers, Bobde replied “We don't see you are dealing with this issue effectively. Who is going to be responsible for bloodshed if any?”
The farmers have been protesting for a month now climbing all the odds, crossing borders and even traversing tear gas.
While it was stated earlier that former Chief Justice of India RM Lodha will be heading the committee, Lodha today confirmed his renege.
The Supreme court has already discussed its disappointment with the Centre and accused it of not handling the matter properly.
Bobde in his statement addressed the Centre “Each one of us we will be responsible if anything goes wrong. We don't want any injuries or blood on our hands," the Chief Justice had said in a series of sharp comments.
The top court committed a plea to farmers union for pausing the tractor rally which the farmers announced will be held on 26th January.
The Supreme court’s decision might be a counter offer to all the other negotiations seeking farm bill implementations nationwide.
The farmers howbeit stay adamant to their decision of accepting no short than cancelling of laws. Even after eight rounds of discussions with the Central government, the farmers refuse to be trapped in the government’s ‘farm bills are a long-term investment’ formula.
