A case of hypocricy: Twitter lashes out at Uganda

In what can be termed as an irony, social media platform twitter, vented out against the African nation Uganda for its ban on social media apps ahead of the election in the country, stating that the "public conversation" on social media platforms is "never more important than during democratic process". Just few days ago, twitter banned Donald Trump after the events of Capitol Hill protests.

President Yoweri Museveni banned all social media apps including Facebook and Twitter, in the country, accusing them of taking sides in the upcoming election.

Netizens have expressed their displeasure over this and have termed it as complete hypocricy. One of the user commented: "You banned the sharing of accurate journalism that was negative for your preferred candidate during the 2020 election, an egregious tampering with freedom of expression and the public conversation in the midst of an important democratic process".

Hashtag #Uganda has been trending on twitter with over 160k tweets, where users are accusing the social media giant of sheer hypocricy:

The Uganda elections is scheduled for the 14th of January and it already seems to be in a state of turmoil. Ugandan pop star-turned-opposition presidential candidate Bobi Wine cut short a live interview with a Kenyan radio station, saying the military was raiding his home.

President Yoweri Museveni is seeking a sixth elected term in office after being 35 years in power. Human rights groups have accused the Uganda security forces of using excessive force to break up opposition rallies during the campaign. But the government says the strong measures are necessary to ensure people comply with a ban on large crowds imposed to tackle the current coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Museveni has no designated successor within his party, and in 2017 signed a law removing a presidential age limit of 75, allowing him to run again for the presidency. Over 18 million people will be participating in the elections:

The ban on social media platforms is not new or uncommon. Many nation states have implemented it earlier. How far is it justified is a matter of intense discussion. To keep yourselves updated with the latest social media trends, visit checkbrand.online
