#CongressMarchforFarmers: Several leaders along with the General Secretary under preventive detention

The recent Farmer agitations have taken the nation by storm. With the farmer's of Punjab and Haryana leading the stir, the country seems to be divided into two camps: one which has been propagating the farm bills, the other which is vehemently opposing it. One thing seems certain, like any other movement, this one too is being hijacked by some to fulfil their nefarious political objectives.

The Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Rahul Gandhi led the party’s charge against the Centre’s contentious farm laws and marched with a group of MPs from Vijay Chowk to Rashtrapati Bhavan on the 24th of December, 2020. The objective was also to submit a memorandum to the President Ram Nath Kovind, seeking his intervention over the farmers’ protest. Several factions of the Congress along with leaders like Sachin Pilot took to twitter to target the government and make a proclamation regarding the initiative by the Congress Party which was joined by some of the eminent leaders such as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of the alliance.

Rahul Gandhi also spoke for these ongoing protests on his twitter platform:

The memorandum contains over 2 crore signatures by the farmers who want the centre to repeal these laws.
However, Mr Gandhi's sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and several other leaders, were taken into preventive custody by the police and sent away in a bus to a police station after they were stopped. They are all expected to be released shortly.

Rahul Gandhi spoke to the press after meeting the President:

"I want to tell the Prime Minister that these farmers are not going to go back home until these farm laws are repealed. The government should convene a joint session of parliament and take back these laws. Opposition parties stand with farmers and labourers." He further went ahead to attack the Prime Minister along with the government blaming them for the gradual deterioration of democratic principles and fascist ideologies.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's comments resonated with her brother Rahul Gandhi when she commented that "Any dissent against this government is classified as having elements of terror. We are undertaking this march to voice our support for the farmers". She further went ahead to add: "Sometimes they say we are so weak that we don't qualify as Opposition and sometimes, they say that we are so powerful that we have made lakhs of farmers camp at the border for a month. They should first decide what we are."

Twitter has bursted with reactions with citizens and political leaders speaking out in a similar tone:

Addressing the farmers of Madhya Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently stated that under the new law, contract farming will benefit the farmers. The contracts will be only on the produce, not on land. Under the new agriculture reforms, farmers can appeal to the administration if the contract provisions are not followed. Farmers have also been empowered in the new laws to opt out of contracts at any given time they desire. The government has even announced an aid of Rs 18,000 crores for the farmers.

Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Narendra Singh Tomar had taken to twitter on the 17th of December to post a eight page letter addressing the farmers regarding the recent legislations:

According to checkbrand.online, Prime Minister Modi still holds a better ranking than Rahul Gandhi when it comes to sentiment analysis. This reveals the mood of the nation and Mr Gandhi still seems to be far away from creating a substantial impact on the masses:

Opposition parties had tried to block the farm bills in parliament, and had earlier requested the President not to sign on the bills. The bills, they accused, were passed in the Rajya Sabha in an undemocratic manner.

The government has been urging the farmers to hold talks and reach a plausible conclusion but no amount of consolation seems to have any impact. As for now, one can only wish that these protests reach a conceivable end without any disturbance to the notion of social justice.
