Farmers Identify SC’s Manoeuvre, Discards The Four-member Committee

The Supreme Court assigned committee to audit the farm laws and resolve the terrain of farm laws implementation have been rejected by the farmers.

The farmers believe that the committee is nothing but the court’s plot for convincing the farmers to stand off the demand for revocation of the farm bills. The farm unions unconditionally hold their decision to accept nothing but withdrawal of Farm bills 2020.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court put a halt on the bill implementation and set up a committee of four members to resolve the issue in hand. But the farm unions claim that the halt is just a convincing effort of the government to distract the farmers to mingle with the Centre’s attitude.

The farmers have further inseminated their decision to discard the committee’s involvement and also confirmed to continue their tractor parades on 26th January.

“While all organisations welcome the suggestions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court to stay the implementation of the farm laws, they are collectively and individually not willing to participate in any proceedings before a committee that may be appointed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” said the Sanyukt Kisan Morch.

“We opposed the formation of this committee on principle, no matter who was part of it. That is why we issued a press note last night itself, as a preventive and precautionary measure. We did not ask for such a committee, we did not even go to court at all, as our struggle is with the elected government which is responsible for policy decisions,” said Krantikari Kisan Union president Darshan Pal. “However, our worries about the process are proved by the constitution of this committee, and who was chosen to be on it...this is a fraud exercise,” one of the farm leaders said, opposing the committee.

The other farm leaders and groups individually and collaboratively questioned the necessity of forming a committee to restrict showcasing farmers interests.

According to the farmers the four-member committee Ashok Gulati, Anil Ghanwat, Pramod Kumar Joshi and Ashok Gulati already support the Central Government’s analogy of implementing the draconian farm laws.

Bhupinder Singh Mann heading a faction of Bharatiya Kisan Union has been the only leader to support the bills despite Rakesh Tikait opposing it.

Gulati previously called the farm bills a historic step which will boost India’s agri market. In his statement supporting the farm laws, he remembered the 1991 economic reforms and hailed the farm bills calling them the necessary amenities India should have.

Krantikari Kisan Union leader Darshan Pal termed the SC’s appointed committee a mere tactic to distract from the real cause.

The farm union leaders Prem Singh Bhanghu, Rajinder Singh Deep Singh Wala, Jagmohan Singh, Darshal Pal and Balbir Singh Rajewal discussed the farm bill implementation pros and cons with the committee. The leaders also discussed the same with the lawyers representing them in the court and came to the conclusion that the formed committee’s interests already serve the Centre and leaves no room for withdrawing farm laws.

The farm leaders in a statement clarified ‘The Hon’ble Supreme Court was requested by our lawyers as also by other lawyers including Sh Harish Salve to fix the hearing again tomorrow to enable them to consult the organisations and seek their consent to the suggestion of the Hon’ble court,” said the statement. “We have been told that no such hearing has been fixed for tomorrow as per the cause list already published for tomorrow till 9 p.m. and that only the matters are listed for pronouncements for order by the Hon'ble Court. These events have deeply disappointed us, our lawyers and also farmers at large.’

The farmers have decided to participate in the talks with Narendra Singh Tomar and will continue their protests till 15th January.

Today, they are going to burn the farm law copies at the occasion of lohri in order to express their agitation.

Where the farmers have now been in an unending collision with the SC’s decision, famous writer Amaan Bali concludes SC’s committee as eyewash when he writes "It was an eyewash. Farmers unions were right in distancing themselves from it (the SC proceedings)“. He says that all four committee members are “known supporters of the government’s policies”.
