#onenationonelaw Divides Country’s Opinions

The Uniform Civil Code debate ignites as the petitioners seek a plea regarding #onenationonelaw.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a notice on plea seeking uniformity in personal laws of divorce and alimony across all religion.

Two PILs have been filed asking the Centre to consider and implement uniformity across religions regarding the divorce laws.

Responding to the plea, the CJI said that the court can proceed with the hearing but why should different religions be compared and looked from the same ground. He further stated “How will you decide whether to adopt what is in Hinduism, Islam or Christianity?"

After the court’s decision, twitter flooded with #onenationonelaw and a majority of views came through.

Some of the prominent personalities were seen opposing the #onenationonelaw.

Kamal Hassan tweeted “One nation, one law, one religion, Hindi as the only language, one food, one Prime Minister. History has shown that ‘one’ has always led to dictatorship and oppression."

"In an inequitable society where there is no equal justice and no social justice, it is a great injustice to say 'only'!”said Hassan

The counsel replied to the CJI with favoring fundamental rights ahead religious rights and said if the religious rights infringed upon fundamental rights, there is no point of having such rights.

The court further moved concluding they will find a way not to disregard any of the citizens rights.
