Trump Vetoes A $700 Billion Defense Bill | “No one has approved more money for the military than I have,” says the US President
The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump vetoed an annual defense bill last night, the bill includes a whopping fund of $700 Billion and comes after recent threats from the President to veto the defense bill unless Congress includes a provision to abrogate the section 230 - Law that provides legal immunity to social media companies over any illegal content posted by its users, although with exception to prostitution and pirated related material.
“Section 230 facilitates the spread of foreign disinformation online, which is a serious threat to our national security,” said Trump in his statement.
Repealing section 230 has been the Trump Administration’s top priority in the past few months. In May, the US President had signed an executive order to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking to re-amend or revoke the law for national security. Reportedly, the order came as a response to microblogging website Twitter’s fact-checking on Trump’s tweet over claims made on the Presidential elections voter scam.
“Unfortunately, the Act fails to include critical national security measures, includes provisions that fail to respect our veterans and our military’s history, and contradicts efforts by my administration to put America first in our national security and foreign policy actions,” Trump wrote in his statement to the Congress.
“It is a ‘gift’ to China and Russia,” the president further added to his statement.
However, earlier this month, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was passed from both the houses of Congress with veto-proof margins, meaning it won’t be affected by Trump’s veto.
While explaining his veto, Trump wrote to congress saying
"No one has worked harder, or approved more money for the military, than I have - over $2 trillion”.
"During my four years, with the support of many others, we have almost entirely rebuilt the United States military, which was depleted when I took office. Your failure to terminate the very dangerous national security risk of Section 230 will make our intelligence virtually impossible to conduct without everyone knowing what we are doing at every step," he added in his statement to congress.
