Wuhan Citizen Journalist Reported Government’s Inabilities, Now She Is Accused of Spreading Lies
The country alias to be the tattler of coronavirus has sentenced a citizen journalist for serving four year in prison for her reporting in the past one year.
The reporter, Zhang Zhan from Wuhan who reported about the coronavirus in the initial weeks of the virus spread will face trial next week.
The trial comes weeks before an international team of World Health Organization experts is expected to arrive in China to investigate the origins of the pandemic.
She is accused of spreading lies and provoking trouble while dismantling crowd’s reaction towards the deadly virus.
Zhan’s defence lawyer Ren Quanniu confirmed the four year jail term while he also stated ‘ Zhang Zhan looked devastated when the sentence was announced. If they give me a heavy sentence then I will refuse food until the very end’… She thinks she will die in prison.”
Ren also said that Zhan’s health is declining every day and she might not survive the prison term.
Zhan’s reporting of #wuhan coronavirus eruption was able to gather a huge attention from the government and authorities. A million people shared her videos, pictures and all sorts of information she shared about the coronavirus and Wuhan’s unacceptable approach towards handling the virus.
While the court announced the retribution for Zhan’s reporting, thousands of people gathered outside the Shanghai Pudong New District People’s Court and demanded justice.
China is known for punishing the dissidents and putting innocents behind bars.
As Zhang Zhan reported government’s inability to partially inform the citizens about the virus and mark complete lockdown in #wuhan, her reports were attended by the authorities which unfortunately led to her prison terms.
Zhan’s lawyer has also claimed that she is psychologically exhausted and punishing her without any evidence is a preposterous decision.
