On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the Central Government to issue Indian currency notes featuring portraits of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Laxmi on one side and Mahatma Gandhi on the other.

“There is a photograph of Gandhi Ji on Indian banknotes; let that be. On the opposite side, a portrait of Shri Ganesh Ji and Lakshmi Ji should be added,” stated Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, whose party is perceived as pandering to the BJP's Hindutva support base ahead of elections in PM Modi's home state of Gujarat.

“To enhance our country's economic standing, we must make major efforts. Our efforts bear fruit when we enjoy the blessings of Gods and Goddesses. The entire country would receive blessings if there is a portrait of Ganesh Ji and Lakshmi Ji on one side and Gandhi Ji on the other,” Delhi CM Kejriwal remarked.

Mr. Kejriwal's statement came only days before elections in Himachal Pradesh and municipal elections in Delhi, where the AAP is trying to defeat the BJP and eventually become the major rival to the BJP.

The BJP, on the other side, criticized Mr. Kejriwal's remarks, calling them his “latest U-turn.” “He is engaging in political theatre to deflect attention away from his government's shortcomings and the Aam Aadmi Party's anti-Hindu stance.” What Kejriwal said in his press conference is a continuation of his political U-turn, said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra.

The BJP launched an onslaught against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday after he suggested to the government that pictures of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi be printed on currency notes. “Irresponsible” demand, but AAP has nothing to lose and everything to gain following “anti-Hindu” slurs, BJP leaders concede.

The BJP's talking heads that attacked the AAP on Wednesday included national spokesperson Sambit Patra, who cited “anti-Hindu” incidents involving Kejriwal, and Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari, who called the AAP. Shahnawaz Hussain, a BJP politician and former Bihar Minister accused Kejriwal of attempting to “sideline Mahatma Gandhi, while Amit Malaviya, the party's IT department chief, called him a “Hindu bigot.”
