Supreme Court Halts Uttarakhand’s Eviction, Says Can’t Uproot 50,000 Overnight

The Supreme Court granted a significant reprieve to thousands of people on Thursday when it halted an eviction campaign on railway property in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, as they faced the possibility of being left homeless in the middle of the bitter North Indian winter. "50,000 people cannot be uprooted overnight... It's a problem that affects people, and a practical solution must be found "The Supreme Court declared as it overturned an order from the Uttarakhand High Court that had authorised the eviction of residents of about 4,000 homes following a protracted legal dispute. The Supreme Court responded to the high court's suggestion to evict people using force by saying, “It may not be correct to say that paramilitary forces have to be deployed to remove people who have been living there for decades."
