Indian Tax Authorities Raid BBC Offices after Modi Documentary Broadcast, Receives 41.7% Negative Reviews from the Audiences: CheckBrand

The BBC's offices in New Delhi and Mumbai were raided by Indian tax authorities on Tuesday, weeks after the nation outlawed a documentary from the British broadcaster that criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's alleged involvement in violent riots more than 20 years ago.

People were not permitted to enter or exit the offices, according to a BBC News report that aired on television. After using "emergency powers" to prevent the documentary from airing in India, the Indian government announced the raids, adding that Twitter and YouTube complied with the directive.

In the biggest democracy on earth, the action sparked bitter controversy. The attack on press freedom was denounced by critics, and Modi's supporters flocked to his defence.

While some employees were still present in the offices on Tuesday evening, the BBC stated that it was fully cooperating with the raids. Many employees have now left the building, but some were asked to stay and are still helping with the investigations, it said. "We continue to hope that this issue can be resolved as soon as possible while supporting our staff during this time. We're committed to serving our Indian audiences, and our production and journalism are both continuing as usual.
