How does an earthquake occur?
An Earthquake can be defined as the movement of earth’s tectonic plates due to sudden release of stored energy in the Earth’s crust, causing a flush of seismic waves. These waves are measured using a seismometer, commonly called a seismograph and the magnitude of an earthquake is traditionally measured with a Richter scale aka Moment scale. Anything that falls below 3 Richter scale is of low or no damage potential and magnitudes higher than 7 could be catastrophic. Earthquakes or movement of tectonic plates can sometimes cause Tsunamis, something that world experienced in 2004’s Indian Ocean Tsunami. These tectonic plates cause shaking of Earth due to frictional forces resisting their movements.
Earthquakes could occur both naturally or as a result of Human activities. These could be from tectonic plates, volcanic activities, landslides, nuclear tests, and mining operations. Among all, the most common phenomenon is by movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.
