Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Supriya Sule, Kanimozhi Restricted From Delhi Borders Amidst Farmer Protests

Amidst the regular intensifying farmer protests, the opposition leaders today visited the Delhi borders to introspect the farmers’ conditions as speculations arrive of the police atrocities on the borders.

Yesterday, Indian Express’s article stated that the local villages around the Singhu border looked more frustrated by the barricades than the protesting farmers.

Previously, its reported that the borders have no scope for journalist activities as several journalists were hindered from entering the protest sites.

Today, around fifteen opposition parties reached UP-Delhi borders in Ghazipur to see the protesting farmers. The leaders were stopped by the police, one of the members reported.

The known faces including Supriya Sule, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Sugata Roy of TMC and DMK’s Kanimozhi reached the site and were disappointed to see the agitated farmers who have been fighting since October.

Badal shared her views on social media after she was stopped by the police. In a tweet, she said ‘ Saw first hand the conditions created at Ghazipur border. Shocked to see the treatment being meted out to the annadaata. Farmers are barricaded behind fortress like concrete barriers and barbed wire fencing. Even ambulances and fire brigades cannot enter the protest site.’

She further added, ‘We are here so that we can discuss this issue (farmers' protest) in parliament. The Speaker is not letting us raise the issue. Now, all the parties will give details of what is happening here.’

The farm bills have been criticized by the farmers since months now claiming it will lead to farmers exploitation via large corporate houses. The farmers’ dissent not only limits corporate farming but they demand increased MSP to ensure their security. After tremendous attempts, protests, tractor marches, eleven rounds of talks between the Centre and the farmers, the Centre have been continuously denying the farmers demands.

Yesterday the political parties other than the ruling BJP asked the government to revoke the newly passed farm bills as they believe the draconian law will lead to nothing but farmers exploitation.

While the opposition has not intervened government’s decision for the first time, they have already measured stalling the bill at the time when it was passed. Issuing a letter to the President, the same opposition demanded revocation of the three farm bills but their cry was not heard by the ruling government.

The farmers continue to protest hoping the government will someday bow down to their demands.
