Maharashtra Government Asks Setting Up Parliamentary Committee To Look Into Arnab Goswami over Leaked Chats

After Arnab Goswami’s whatsapp chat leak, there is new row over the Maharashtra’s government intervention in the case.

The Maharashtra government has announced processing legal actions against Arnab Goswami for allegedly sharing confidential information with the BARC chief.

The chat transcripts were a part of 3,600 page charge sheet filed by the Mumbai Police against the Republic TV’s Editor-In-Chief Arnab Goswami regarding the TRP scam contained information about the 2019 Pulwama attack and the Balakot strike on Pakistan.

The chat leak had already collected enough criticism and now the government’s intervention makes it more culpable.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in a statement said “We have taken serious note of the 500 pages of leaked WhatsApp messages between Goswami and former Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) chief Partho Dasgupta. In the messages, Arnab speaks about the Balakot airstrike two days before it happened. It is a serious threat to national security if such sensitive information was leaked to the media house.”

He stated that he had asked the Central government to set up a parliamentary committee to discuss on the matter and then they will proceed with actions against Goswami. “On the state level, we are checking if Maharashtra Police can initiate action. I am speaking to senior police officers and have sought legal opinion if action can be initiated under section 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923,” he said.

Goswami responded to the accusations saying “I am horrified that the Congress party actually thinks that any journalist in India expressing the views publicly stated by the Government is committing a crime. It is beyond absurd to suggest that expecting India to strike back at Pakistan, after the Pulwama attack, was a crime.”
