#RealGodProhibitsEatingMeat ?

On the eve of Christmas 2020, an unusual trend was witnessed on the social media platform twitter with a trending hashtag #RealGodProhibitsEatingMeat:

Being secular, just like the nation is, the hashtag did not seem to have spared  any community. It targeted Hindus, Muslims as well as Christians with taglines such as "God never had meat".

An investigation reveals that these tweets seem to have originated from a convicted Indian religious leader, who claims to be spiritual successor and an incarnation of Kabir, Rampal. The tweets seem to be a kind of an advertisement for his book "Gyan Ganga".

The "dear" leader is however, serving a life sentence for murder in Hisar Jail.

Rampal is also the founder of the Satlok Ashram and a twitter account exists for the same:

Bodies of five women and an 18 month old child was found in this same ashram when the Police had tried to detain him in November 2014.

Rampal was actually an engineer at the Haryana Irrigation Department before he started delivering sermons and according to his website, According to his website, he is the messiah whose birth was predicted by Nostradamus. He eventually became an important leader and lived in a home with 25 well maintained rooms.

Sociologist Dipankar Gupta has commented that Indians in general beleive in magic. In an urbanising country bursting with ambition, frustration and confusion, gurus are like placebos for the uncertain masses. People flock to them, thinking that they can help give them the next big break in their lives. They look to them for miracle cures for their severely ill family members. This makes them influential and powerful.

The concept of "Guru" is no alien to the Indian population. The world's best known cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar, is a follower of Sai Baba, the late Indira Gandhi, would often turn to her yoga guru Dhirendra Brahmachari for advice.

Whether God actually prohibits eating meat or not is a matter of debate and endless discussions but such trends only destroy the basic fabric of our society and give rise to communal tensions. Checkbrand.online urges its readers to use their discretion to arrive at conclusions before following blindly.
