Serum Institute of India Ablazed, Adar Poonawalla Takes It To Twitter
Serum Institute of India which has been producing the coronavirus vaccine Covishield today witnessed a huge fire breakout.
The company is the only producer of the vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca which was recently given emergency usage authorisation in India.
The first inoculation drive was inaugurated by PM Modi on 16th January 2021.
According to the police, the fire broke out at around 2 pm on the fourth and fifth floor of the Institute and by now three people have been evacuated from the floor.
For now, the cause of the huge fire is not discovered but it is confirmed that the incident happened at the Manjari facility where the vaccine is produced.
Reports confirm that the vaccine and its production is safe and there is no affect on the vaccine production as the fire broke away from the area assigned for vaccine produce.
SII chief Adar Poonawalla tweeted about the incident and thanked everybody who supported the institute. He also declared that there are no lives lost, however some of the workers have faced minor injuries.
Adar tweeted "Thank you everyone for your concern and prayers. So far the most important thing is that there have been no lives lost or major injuries due to the fire, despite a few floors being destroyed."
The reports from PTI have confirmed the presence of 10 fire tenders and an NDRF team at the site to slow down the mishap.
SII is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturing company. With it’s humongous vaccine manufacture, the institute aims to provide enough vaccines to cover India’s population.
Several countries including Latin America, Africa, and Central Asia have been looking forward to SII for covid-19 vaccine.
The place where fire broke out was an under-construction building in SII. The area is guarded by NDRF and continuous evacuation is carried out.
