#BANTANDAV: Amazon's Web Series faces backlash

Just a day ago, the popular web series Tandav was trending on all the media platforms and just a day after, it has probably become the most hated web series of the month of January 2021. Hashtag BanTandavNow has registered over 93,000 tweets so far:

Several Netizens have gone as far as writing a letter to the Central Minister Prakash Javedkar to impose a ban on the web series citing the hurting of religious sentiments as the prime reason.

The issue has possibly stemmed up from this particular scene in which two of the protagonist are seen performing a skit in the college auditorium. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is targeted for mocking Lord Shri Ram and Lord Shiva, which, not precisely can be justified as mocking but a light on the socio-economic condition of the country.

Some netizens have also given it a political angle by asking the directors to make a series on love jihad and Paris bombings:

Furthermore, people are also stating that the web series Tandav is a glorification of what happened at the JNU few years back.

Kapil Mishra, a BJP worker has also posted a video on the social media platform twitter asking the regulatory authorities to completely ban Tandav and write an email regarding the same to the minister Prakash Javedkar:

Several shows like Ghoul, Sacred Games and more recenly A Suitable Boy, has been targetted by groups for hurting religious sentiments in the country.

But how far are these justified is a matter of debate. Shows like The Young Pope, Spotlight, The Handmaid’s Tale, Good Omens, Supernatural and several others, depict Christianity controversially. Almost every other movie projects a terrorist to be of muslim origin. So does that mean we should ban all of them or keep the little window of "tolerance" open ? And if the same amount of zeal were for pertaining issues like poverty or education, we could have possibly solved them by now. However, to each its own and in a democratic order, every one possibly holds a right to express his/her opinions.
